Segregation And Desegregation A Christian Approach

The following is an analysis of Segregation and Desegregation: A Christian Approach by T.B. Maston (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1959). Page numbers referenced are enclosed in parentheses. Throughout his book, Maston deceptively argues that desegregation would not necessary lead to integration. Maston states that the objective of his book â€Å"is primarily an attempt at an evaluation of segregation and desegregation from the Christian perspective† (p. vii). From his subverted Christian perspective, segregation is evil, a great sin. Desegregation and integration are divinely good. In Chapter 1, Maston discuses the Supreme Court’s decision of 1954. Maston states that the Supreme Court’s decision of May 17, 1954, â€Å"declared that school segregation was contrary to the federal constitution† (p. 1). How can school segregation, based on earlier Supreme Court rulings, be constitutional on May 16, 1954, and unconstitutional on May 17, 1954 without any chan ge in the Constitution? Obviously, the Supreme Court’s ruling was more political than judicial. As it relied on sociologists and other social scientists instead of the Constitution, previous Supreme Court rulings, and historical understanding and intent of the Constitution proves that the decision was political. The Supreme Court, especially since Franklin Roosevelt’s appointments, seldom lets the Constitution stand in the way of political expediency. The film was based on a crime that was biographical. The film was an American film. The star cast of the film was Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, who played the main and primary characters in the film such as Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. The said film also featured Gene Hackman, Michael Pollard along with Estelle Parsons. As a result of the frustration of Bonnie, she decided to become the partner of Clyde in committing the crime. They began their partnership by pulling off certain holdups, but such were not much lucrative. The partnership then shifted their gear and started committing bigger crimes. They began to rob banks. When they were caught while committing the bank robbery, Clyde kills the bank manager and then moves on the running board of a car that is moving (Fuinger and David). T hen Ivan strikes the bargain with Hamer and then sets a trap related to the outlaws for the leniency that was shown by the boy. After this, when Clyde and Bonnie made a halt on the other side of the road, to help Mr. Moss for fixing a tire that is flat the police that was hiding in the bushes opened fire; that riddled the body of them with the bullets. Then Hamer came out from hiding and started looking at the bodies of the couple pensively (Grist and Leighton). The film Bonnie and Clyde was made with an intention to be presented like the version of romance and comedy that was presented in the films of 1930's that was related to the violent gangster scenes. The film Bonnie and Clyde made implementation of the modern techniques of film making. The director portrayed or used some violent scenes with the help of comic tone and then made the shifting to graphic and horrific violence. There was a strong influence of the new wave directors of France in the film, in respect of editing and using tones for several scenes, that was evident particularly during the ending sequence of the movie. Hill was enjoying his criminal life and also spend most of their nights at Copacabana and was involved in the act of carousing with girls. Then Hill marries a girl named Karen. Karen in the initial years protested against the criminal activities of his husband but in the later years was seduced the lifestyle of her husband that was glamorous (Humphreys and Brianna). Henry then sets her mistress Janice in an apartment and then establishes certain relationship with the mistress. When his wife came to know of the relationship she threatens Henry under gunpoint. Then Paulie directed Henry to live with his wife. Later on, Henry accompanied by Jimmy went to collect money from a gambler but was arrested by the police. In the prison, Henry involved himself in selling drugs to support his family from outside (Kolker and Robert). After getting released from the prison, Henry again involved himself in the activity of selling of drugs and ignored the warnings delivered by Paulie. Later on, while organizing a drug deal, Hill was arrested by the police and also received a nervous wreck due to the use of cocaine and suffered from insomnia. Then he came to upon his release from Karen that she had flushed a significant amount of cocaine that amounted approximately $60000 (Porfirio and Robert). Then Henry forced to leave gangster life and lead his life like a nor mal man. At the end of the movie, Hill narrated that "I'm an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like aschnook. The film GodFellas was scheduled to be opened in Chicago in the 21st of the September. Henry Hill made the narration of a kid who is of the Irish-Italian origin. The primary objective of the kid was to become a wise guy from his early age. Karen was another narrator of the film. Karen narrated the story of girl of the Jewish origin. The girl made the realization that her total social life was under the Mafia. The wives of the mob never went to anywhere in the society or never made the talking with any person who is not the part of the mafia world. In accordance to the girl, the values of the Mafia society are the basic values of the society. Values The Vales that you develop as you go threw life determine what kind of a person you become. Most of my values I learned were from my family, my friends, and the people that I admire. There are certain things that I value in my life; one of those is the friends that I made when I lived in Heidelberg, Germany for two years. Another thing that I value is having a chance to live in Europe for two years. Finally the last value that I would like to talk about is my relationship with my parents. The Guys that I made friends with in Heidelberg are probably gone to be my best friends for the rest of my life. The reason why I value these friends so much is because I really do not think that I could find another group of guys like them. When I first moved to Germany at the beginning of my junior year I met these guys and we went on a trip to the Octoberfest in Munich. We had a great time and ever since that trip we have all been the best of friends and nothing really has come between us. I think one of the reasons we are such good friends is that do not let girls come between us. I have seen so many friendships ruined because some guy has a girlfriend that he spends all his time with, and he kind of forgets about spending time with his boys. So my buddies and I have this kind of value, I guess you call it, bros before whoes, which means no matter how fine or how special the girl is she will never come first. There was no particular event that made us become closer friends I thin k that we are just have a lot of the same interest and that is what makes us such close friends. We have a great time when we are together it does not matter where we are as long as we are with each other we will have a great time Being able to live in Europe for two years was a great experience for me. When my parents first told me that we were going to be moving to Germany I was a little upset. But I am glad we did because I was able to experience so many things that kids in the States would never get to experience. For instance, I was able to drink some really good beer. I traveled to a lot of places and events that kids in the States were not able to go to. I went to the Octoberfest, Love Parade, spring break in Ibiza, Spain, and a whole lot of other stuff. If I never lived in Germany I would have never been able to experience all the things that I did. Living in Germany was a valuable experience for me because I think it gave me a different perspective of the world. My good relationship with my parents is something that I value because some kids do not have the pleasure of having a good relationship with their parents. I can pretty much tell my parents anything and they will be cool with it. For example my parents know that I drink. They understand that I am going to drink and as long as I am safe and responsible about it my parents do not have a problem with me drinking. A lot of times my dad will come out with my buddies and I when we go drinking. I dont have to go around lying and hide to my parents that I drink like a lot of other kids do. My parents and I rarely ever get into fights. So a good relationship with my parents is something that I value a lot. Values are something that everybody has. They are basically what shape a person into who they are. Without the values that I learned from my parents, my friends, and people that I look up to I would not be the person that I am today. Less stuff, more happiness - Essay Example It is actually a change of paradigm of how we think, of how we prioritize things in our lives, on how we arrange our values and belief system and what we believe and think that could make us happy. And his idea is grounded on good reasoning, economics and pragmatism and is actually doable. He opened his speech or lecture by asking what’s in the box? This is quite intriguing and invites to listen more to know he is up to. This is actually a good strategy because it engages us and gets us into thinking. He then outlined his thesis that less may actually be more. Less stuff means less space and it would equal to less carbon footprint saving us dollars and the environment along the way. TED proposed a strategy on how to do this which is he called â€Å"Life edited† which is really living little. He enumerated his three approaches that are edit ruthlessly, think small and make multifunctional things. By editing ruthlessly, he meant cutting the extemporaneous things in our li ves – to think before we buy if the thing we intend could truly make us happy. By thinking small, he meant efficiency to limit consumption to what we actually need. In his words, he put forth the idea that small is sexy. And lastly, he put forward the idea of being multifunctional with things that can do several functions. As a conclusion, he answered his question intriguingly of â€Å"what’s in the box†. That it doesn’t really matter because he knows he doesn’t need it. Because less is more and we have to lessen to make room for the good stuff. Going through his speech/lecture made me think about lot of things. He made me reevaluate what does it take to be happy and lead a good life. So I dissected the term in a manner that we study things in school. The term â€Å"good† refers to anything that is desirable or can be qualified under specific standards, or a moral occurrence, definitions that are general and relative. Inferring from TED†™s lecture, I now define the term from a psychological perspective to be an act or state of mind that yields more benefits than harm and offers a net good. Being happy and leading a good life therefore means engaging in activities that generate net good to a person’s life. I mention this because TED missed something on what makes us truly happy. He only argued that we do not need a lot of things to be happy but he did not answer the bigger question of what makes us happy. Such, I will pick up where TED ended and will provide my own thoughts on what makes us happy with TED’s lecture in mind. Beyond the material things that get us in debt by our acquisitiveness, I believe that the best things in life that could make us truly happy are free. These things do not come from department stores or do we need to purchase them with our credit cards but actually comes from our social ties that make our heart quiver with joy and happiness. They usually come from our social ties t hat not only minimize our sadness but also make us happy. We can find these ties from our family and loved ones and they do not cost us anything except time and our willingness to open ourselves to love and be loved. Like TED, I will also mention an advantage. Unlike him, I will not equate it in dollar terms but rather, in psychological term as what I have previously mentioned. Importance of â€Å"patriotism† during war Essay Wilfred Owen in his poem â€Å"Asleep† and Andrew Hudgins in his poem â€Å"Listen? The Flies† have analyzed the concepts of death, war and violence. Even though both poets experienced the military actions themselves, they did not describe the life of soldiers and the philosophy of war from the patriotic point of view. On the contrary, in their poems Owen and Hudgins illustrated the most horrible scenes of war that emphasize that war can never be justified because it destroys human life and brings physical and moral sufferings. Both poets portray death as the only way out for soldiers, express compassion towards soldiers as the greatest victims of war and describe low importance of human life as the result of military actions in order to disprove the idea of patriotism that plays upon the mind of soldiers and exploits them for the mercenary interests of their governors. First, Andrew Hudgins and Wilfred Owen justify death to some extent because it rescues soldiers from anger of war and occurs as the natural process unlike war that goes against all moral laws.   When Hudgins talks about war in his poem he describes human life as purity that was shaded by war and turned into putrefaction: â€Å"everything that lives is pitched from purity to putrefaction, back and forth†.   At the same time Wilfred Owen, uses comparison in order to show that death becomes more pleasant than life during war. He compares death to the deep sleep: â€Å"his deeper sleep lies shaded by the shaking of great wings, and the thoughts that hung the stars.† The soldier in the poem has finally got a chance to have some rest after long days of battle. The main characters of both poems are not afraid of death and to some extent they accept it because even death cannot be more frightful than war. Thus, in the poem â€Å"Asleep† Wilfred Owen describes the soldier who does not suffer in his dead sleep because he is â€Å"above these clouds, these rains, these sleets of lead†, above all severe weather conditions, constant attacks and stress from killing and being killed. Moreover, those soldiers who are still alive envy the dead soldier that does not have to wake up in the morning and see the horrors of war again. Similar to Wilfred Owen, Andrew Hudgins refers to Bible to justify death. He uses allusion and gives quotes from the Bible to show that death is more natural for a soldier than war: â€Å"from ash to ash, it says, from dust to dust, with fire and dirty water in between†. Hudgins depicts how soldiers were waiting for death in prison camps praising the flies. The flies are symbols of death that is always near. In the last part of the poem the author killed a fly that got in his room but he knows that there will be more flies in the future. The main character of the poem does not see any point in struggling for life because it’s easier to accept death that is unavoidable during war.   Thus, according to both authors, the horrors of war lead to the condition when death becomes a happy end for a soldier because it sets him free from all the hardships that he has to go through during war and it can be explained by laws of nature. Second, the authors stress the cruelty of military actions by describing the dead soldiers as the greatest victims of war and showing their compassion for them. The length and the concentration of events in both poems are the brightest indication of the authors’ ability to awaken in the mind of readers the same kind of sympathy that both poets have for their characters. The length of the both poems does not let the reader to remain indifferent to the events which take place and arouses the feelings of grief, horror and deep sorrow in the reader’s mind. Thus, the poem of Wilfred Owen is short that enables us to read it at one sitting at the highest degree of excitement. The phrases in the poem â€Å"Asleep† are abrupt that turns the reading into the process when there is a minute to think and move to the next line. The poem by Andrew Hudgins is longer; however, most of the sentences are short and it provokes the reader to pay attention to every detail and not to leave anything without attention. All events which occur in the poem â€Å"Asleep† are concentrated in one place during certain time interval; at the same time in the poem â€Å"Listen? The Flies† the author tells about events which happened in different places during different periods of time. The concentration of time and place in the poem by Wilfred Owen is used because the author wants stay-at-home citizens to be carried to the battle field for a moment, experience what the soldiers experience every day and see the â€Å"backstage† and the reality of war. Lack of focus on time and place in the poem by Andrew Hudgins makes the reader see the war from the different standpoints and contemplate more about the meaning of life. Thus, at the beginning Hudgins describes how he noticed the body of the dead soldier, and then he points out that death took away many people in prison camps, after that he explains death using quotes from Bible and at the end he goes back to the symbolic scene with the flies. Third, both authors illustrate that military victory and destruction of enemies during war have higher importance than life of a person. The soldiers in both poems are described as some human bodies without soul rather than as human beings. In the poem â€Å"Asleep† no one notices the dead soldier; his head â€Å"confuses more and more with the low mould† and his hair becomes of the same color â€Å"with the grey grass of finished fields†.   It seems like the soldier is the machine that is out of order. Andrew Hudgins describes with certain irony the scene when the soldiers â€Å"walked the marsh† and sang the patriotic song; however, their friend was dead. The author portrays how someone’s death can be neglected because patriotic idea supported by political and economic interests plays more important role.   The dead soldiers are heroes because they were killed for their country. However, the question remains whether the interests that they defend are the interests of people or the interests of politicians. Both poems lead us to the conclusion that the consequences of patriotism are death and emotional breakdown. The poets used different techniques to emphasize that the glorious idea of military patriotism is based on political ambitions and soldiers are only instruments. The romantic beliefs about nobility of military actions made both characters of the poems the victims of war whose life lost its value and death became the answer to sufferings and hardships.

Susan Hills Women in Black and Mary Shellys Frankenstein :: English Literature

Susan Hill's 'Women in Black' and 'Mary Shelly's 'Frankenstein' The word gothic means 18th Century literature referring to a frightening manner of content being used. I have chosen two gothic novels to indicate the typical features of a gothic novel. One is Susan Hill's 'Women in Black' and 'Mary Shelly's 'Frankenstein'. These two gothic novels concentrate on the two major worries within society when these books were published. Frankenstein concentrates on the pre-curser on science fiction. This pre-curser in Frankenstein is man's objective to play god. Frankenstein was written in a period of time when science was elevating but society in general was afraid to accept a progress being made by man they preferred progresses justified by God. Mary Shelly could relate to her novel of 'Frankenstein' to the period of time when it was written because the many people living in the 18th century when she was alive, were driven by religion not by science and new revelations being made by man were considered to be playing god. In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein she states in the introduction of the book that, during the time period when Frankenstein was written the majority of published novels were not gripping or new and her novel would make an unusual change to which society can relate to. The Women in black concentrates on the grief when losing a young child. This was published in 2000 and it is relatable towards today's society because a lot parents today can relate to having children and know how protective they are towards their own children. Personally since I do not have children of my own I found it difficult to relate with the grief the characters posses and from that my general interest in the story began to sway. The typical feature a gothic novel possesses is setting the scene. The second chapter of The Women in Black concentrates on the surroundings, the author portrays the weather on a Monday afternoon in November as a lightning heart of change, never seeming to come fully light and also raw to and a yellow fog, a filthy fog, evil smelling fog, a fog that choked and blinded, smeared and stained. Susan Hill instantaneously creates a felling of ill being and fear. The novel begins in November which is a symbolism of death, creating negative atmosphere to begin the novel with. In comparison with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein this is very similar. When the creature Frankenstein is created, the Author portrays the weather and time of day as a, dreary night of November. Also instantaneously Mary shelly has created a felling of fear describing the event to occur again in the month of November and also

As the human race ‘evolves' and progresses it has created an environment unsuitable for the generations to come. This Darwinist environment promotes the ideals of a ‘dog-eat-dog' world, in which one person's ambitions are more important than another human beings. People strive for the ideal life in which money is not an issue, so the matter of living comfortably is not a problem. To live comfortably is an idea of life without worry of matters such as starving, fiscal responsibility, and lord shelter.In order to achieve this life without worry, many people have progressed in heir businesses and technologies further improving the civilization, but at the cost of the environment around them. At the rate in which the human race is depleting its natural resources, future generations are going to struggle living at the same standards of the current human race. For example, since natural fuel sources are depleting which most transport vehicles depend upon, the price of gas will most likely escalate even more and less people will be able to afford the costs of owning a gas powered vehicle.However, the depletion of resources is the least to worry about; the use of all gasoline yields arbor dioxide. This carbon dioxide rises into the atmosphere and slowly tears away at the ozone layer by reacting with the chemical: ozone. As the ozone layer depletes, more of the sun's harmful and heating rays penetrate the Earth warming it. If too much of the ozone is depleted, the globe's average temperature will rise and throw nature off balance. Areas around the Earth's equator are already feeling its effects.Drought plagues the agricultural industry of the United States, especially Texas, because lack of water does not allow for the prosperity of crops and livestock. The human race is also digressing socially. Disease, illness, and starvation plagues third-world countries around the world while people in first-world nations worry about their ‘Faceable statuses' and ‘Twitter feeds. ‘ Economic classing also burdens the modern human race. For instance, one percent of America's population controls more than one-third of the United States' wealth.About fifty million people live below the poverty line which is a fiscal value of one person living with about twelve thousand dollars a year. ‘The rich get richer, while the poor get poorer. ‘ More and more people Join the impoverished population every year, but very little people Join he wealthy populations. Corruption also burdens several national governments. Foreign relations tend to be negative and war is constantly underway. Russia recently invaded Crimea and claimed the territory to attain peace, but a nation's rights were still violated.Another world war can erupt Just as easily as the first and second wars took place. Both of the world wars greatly impacted the environments the human race occupies, for example Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Earth has been infested by a parasi te that is sucking the life out of it and depleting all its natural resources. This parasite is the human race. Humans constantly tear down forests, mine its natural resources leaving huge gaping holes in the planet, and send tons of debris into the Earth's atmosphere further damaging the planet.Several species of animals have gone extinct due to the massive eradication of ecosystems throughout the world to harvest natural resources. Animals are becoming endangered because their natural habitats can no longer sustain life when their sources of shelter, food, and water are gone. The theory of Darwinism comes into play; if an animal cannot survive in an environment it must adapt to the new hangs, for if it does not the animal will and should die. Unfortunately, the human race most likely will not be able to adapt to a world consumed by water.As the global temperature rises, polar ice caps melt at increasing rates and increase the sea level, the â€Å"looming catastrophe. â€Å"(Rich ard 1) Beaches are growing smaller and smaller each year, and eventually the water will engulf major cities, such as New York. In fact, Hurricane Sandy would not have been as disastrous at it was if the sea level was lower. As human civilization ‘progresses' it is slowly destroying the only planet suitable or sustaining human life. Why grow a tree? It only makes the oxygen humans need to breathe in order to survive and function at fullest capacity.Greed for power and money has plagued human civilization and will ultimately lead to the extinction or near extinction of humanity. The lack of care for fellow humans, animals, and the Earth is destroying the planet. The human race will have to start all over again as it depletes all of the Earth's natural resources and destroys the only planet humans exists on, as far as evidence shows. Profile of Hannibal, Romes Greatest Enemy Hannibal (or Hannibal Barca) was the leader of the military forces of Carthage that fought against Rome in the Second Punic War. Hannibal, who almost overpowered Rome, was considered Romes greatest enemy. Birth and Death Dates Its  unknown, but Hannibal was thought to have been born in 247 BCE and died 183 BCE. Hannibal used catapults to hurl pots filled with poisonous snakes into the enemy ships. The Pergamese panicked and fled, allowing the Bithynians to win. Family and Background Hannibals full name was Hannibal Barca. Hannibal means joy  of Baal. Barca means lightning. Barca is also spelled Barcas, Barca, and Barak. Hannibal was a son of Hamilcar Barca (d.228 BCE), the military leader of Carthage during the First Punic War in which he was defeated in 241 BCE Hamilcar developed a base for Carthage in southern Spain, which helps explain the geography and transalpine adventure of the Second Punic War. When Hamilcar died, his son-in-law Hasdrubal took over, but when Hasdrubal died, 7 years later, in 221, the army-appointed Hannibal general of the forces of Carthage in Spain.​ Why Hannibal Was Considered Great Hannibal retained his reputation as a formidable opponent and great military leader even after Carthage lost the Punic Wars. Hannibal colors the popular imagination because of his treacherous trek with elephants across the Alps to face the Roman army. By the time the Carthaginian troops had finished the mountain crossing, he had about 50,000 troops and 6000 horsemen with which to face and defeat the Romans 200,000. Representation of Evil in â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† Introduction Russian folklore is rich with various myths, legends and folk tales that detail the life of various mythical characters. In many of such tales, there is extensive use of magic, witchcraft and the use of extraordinary powers. However, the most common characteristic of Russian folklore is the use of women in storytelling. Historical scholars define Russia’s literature as one that is rich with folk tales involving mystical adventure. However, most of these tales have a heroine instead of a hero at the end. Vasilisa the Brave has its setting at a time when magic and the use of extraordinary power was at its peak. A story is told of a young lady named Vasilisa who is sent by her cruel step-mother to collect some light from a witch called Baba Yaga. However, the main essence of the errand is to have Vasilisa be harmed and possibly die in the process of collecting the light. However, it is her humility and generosity that saves Vasilisa from being devoured by the witch Baba Yaga. The condition given by the witch is that Vasilisa completes a few tasks including basic household chores for Baba Yaga. After successfully completing the task, Baba Yaga hands Vasilisa a lantern fashioned from a skull, which ultimately burns the stepmother and the stepsisters to ashes. Background The story of Vasilisa is laden with symbolism. The writer uses various representations of the local culture to relate to the actual happenings in contemporary culture. The character of Baba Yaga has also been used on various platforms to bring out not only an evil but also a powerful character. â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† characterizes Baba Yaga as a dangerous person who wields massive power of magic. However, her actions towards Vasilisa paint a person who despite being associated with evil does not seem to support evil deeds against the innocent in the society. From the common folklore history, Baba Yaga comes out as the villain who will go to any lengths to harm the protagonist. It is no doubt that Baba Yaga’s character is meant to strike a balance in terms of interpretation and giving the story the intended happy ending. Representation of Evil in â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† is seen as being more of a Russian Cinderella story thus appealing to the Western readers. Despite the fact that the story has been written in so many forms by writers who have different versions of what happens in the story, the basic facts in the story are predominantly similar. The story revolves around a young lady Vasilisa. After the death of her mother, Vasilisa is left with no one to take care of her. However before her death, Vasilisa’s mother leaves her a doll that is supposed to help Vasilisa whenever she needs help. The condition by the mother is that whenever she needs help, Vasilisa should feed the doll and the doll reciprocates by assisting her in her problems. The greatest condition that Vasilisa is given by her mother is never to let anyone know of the doll’s existence (Zheleznova, 1966). Vasilisa’s stepmother is described as a cruel woman who discriminates against Vasilisa making her do most of the chores in t he household while her daughters lazy around the house doing nothing. Further cruel treatment directed towards Vasilisa is whereby she is given only a merger portion of all meals. However, Vasilisa does not eat her meals but rather saves the entire meals for the doll which in turn helps her complete her chores. The doll in the story is a characterization of how Russians and the society in general view super-natural beings. The doll in this case is presented as a mundane object that has extraordinary capabilities while keeping in mind that it can be found anywhere. The author tries to portray Vasilisa’s relationship to the doll as mutually exclusive. It is the treatment towards the doll that dictates whether the doll offers any help to Vasilisa. By feeding the doll, Vasilisa is rewarded by having her chores done by the doll. It is important to note that Vasilisa does not have direct power in her relationship with her doll. Hartman (1993) is of the view that it is only by using the doll that Vasilisa is able to improve her living condition characterized by cruelty. Vasilisa was able to follow her mother’s instructions who directed that she feeds the doll any time that she needs the dolls’ assistance. In addition, Vasilisa is not supposed to tell anyone regarding the doll’s existence. The application of these in the contemporary society is the need to follow instructions. The author depicts Vasilisa as an obedient lady who always heeds instructions from elders as it is depicted throughout the story. It is this obedience that helps Vasilisa time and time again during difficult situations. By being obedient, Vasilisa is able to escape the wrath of her stepmother and later from Baba Yaga. Towards the end, it is the willingness to listen to advice that eventually sees Vasilisa get married to the tsar. When her father is away on business, Vasilisa’s cruel stepmother plots to kill Vasilisa and together with her daughters send Vasilisa though the forest to Baba Yaga for some light. Upon arrival Vasilisa is required by the witch Baba Yaga to do menial household duties and also serve her meals. Vasilisa does all the work without questioning and even goes further to enlist the help of her doll when Baba Yaga requires her to do some almost impossible tasks. After completing all her task, Baba Yaga asks Vasilisa why she is so humble and why she does things without questioning. In her response, Vasilisa asks Baba Yaga about three horsemen who she had previously seen entering and leaving the witch’s homestead. Baba Yaga responds by saying that the three horsemen are her my bright daymy red sunand my dark night—and all three of them are my faithful servants(197). In a critical analysis of fairy tales known as Shadow and Evil In Fairy Tales, the author states that Baba Yaga’s reference to owning the night and day is a literary representation of the pagan culture not only in Russia but the world in general. Franz is of the view that Russian paganisms manifest itself particularly in the Russian society that often has hard-line views on different issues in the society. For some reason, Russia has over the years been viewed as ‘female’ with the reference of ‘rodina’ which means motherland being the best example to support this reference. In relation to â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful†, the author is seen to hand more power to women based on the fact that from the story, women seem to make decisions and are also the key characters in the story. In light with all the female characters in the story, Vasilisa’s fate rests with the major characters that are; her mother, the doll, Baba Yaga and her stepmother. Baba Yaga claims to own day and night. This situation replicates most countries and the level of authority exerted to the common citizens. Franz also notes that there are several skulls in Baba Yaga’s hut which is interpreted as the witch’s power over life and death. This can be compared to the power of life and death that the state has over ordinary citizens. In Indo-European folklore, light is often used to symbolize knowledge. Most Western fairy tales describe the quest for knowledge as progressive growth that is beneficial in the society. From the story, Vasilisa was sent by her stepmother to get some light for Baba Yaga. The representation of light in the contemporary society is knowledge. However, â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† introduces a rather unique feature of Russian tale. Instead of the quest for knowledge being represented as a beneficial process, the Russian version suggests that the quest for knowledge is a dangerous process and thus should be avoided unless there are compelling reasons as to why the process must be undertaken. It is important to note that by being sent to collect some light from Baba Yaga, Vasilisa’s stepmother expects that she will not survive her task. However, Vasilisa’s behavior and conduct enables her to succeed in her quest. In addition to this, Vasilisa is able to acknowledge her subordinate role in the society particularly based on how she treats Baba Yaga. Thus from a wider perspective, the author tries to emphasize the rewards that come with good behavior and humility in the society. Faced with a near-impossible task, Vasilisa is able to tame even Baba Yaga who is a witch. Baba Yaga even goes further to state that she does not comprehend how Vasilisa is willing to take orders without questioning. As stated by Compora (2010), the metaphor of identifying Baba Yaga with the state is continued further in the story. From the story, it is permissible for Vasilisa to inquire about some of the things that happen at Baba Yaga’s hut. However, Baba Yaga tells Vasilisa that not every question has an appropriate answer. Baba Yaga goes further to tell Vasilisa that too much knowledge will lead to old age. Before answering the question about the three horsemen, Baba Yaga asks Vasilisa how she was able to complete all the tasks given to her. Vasilisa says that the reason why she successfully completed various tasks was because she had her mother’s blessing. From the story, Baba Yaga is seen as both the villain and the protagonist. This assumption is based on the fact that she rewards Vasilisa for her good behavior and exhibiting good morals. On the other hand, Baba Yaga is described as terrible when she is angry. All the main characters have certain characteristics that define their personality. Vasilisa is portrayed as humble, obedient and hardworking. Vasilisa’s stepmother and stepsisters are portrayed as cruel, selfish and evil. Baba Yaga on the other hand strikes out as considerate and non-manipulative. The portrayal of Vasilisa as selfless implies that she always considers other people’s opinion in her decisions. This reflects in modern society the importance of selflessness. Perhaps to show just how much generosity is in the society, Vasilisa’s stepmother and stepsisters attempt to use Baba Yaga’s power to destroy Vasilisa. This is evident from the story whereby Vasilisa is sent to fetch some light from Baba Yaga even though the stepmother and stepsister knew that she was likely to be harmed in the process of collecting the light. However, it is the stepmother and stepsisters who pay for their evil deeds with their lives. According to Schielzo (1983), â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† further characterizes the use of stepmothers in mythology. Since time immemorial, there is always a negative connotation that accompanies the word stepmother. Stepmothers have been used in myths to contradict the positive nature of mothers. It is therefore not surprising that throughout the folklore history, stepmothers always seem to carry specific personal traits. The most common attribute that is associated with stepmothers is jealousy. In the case of Vasilisa, she is mistreated by her stepmother simply because the stepmother felt that she was prettier than her own children. The same scenario of a jealous stepmother is replicated in various stories throughout history. Baba Yaga gives Vasilisa a skull with fiery eyes indicating that this was the light that the stepmother and the stepdaughters had requested for. Vasilisa innocently takes the skull with her back to her stepfamily that is immediately burnt to ashes by the fiery eyes. The death of Vasilisa’s stepmother and stepsisters mark the assumption in early mythology and story writing that evil never wins. Vasilisa maintains her humble nature which gives the story one of the rarest features of Russian literature which is a happy ending. Conclusion â€Å"Vasilisa the Beautiful† is a manifestation of how various phenomena influenced early folklore. Most mythical analogies incorporate the use of a supernatural being, witchcraft and magic. Also a common trait in such analogies is the use of an evil stepmother. This application relates to so many things in the society and is meant to reflect the situation on the ground. From the beginning of the story, the writer is very specific regarding the direction of the story. Perhaps it is the use of magic that has the greatest impact on the story. Critics argue that despite it not being realistic to apply magic in modern literature, the latter was extremely relevant in early literature especially Greek Myths and Legends. More importantly, the major themes analyzed in the story indicate a systemic application of literature to influence behavior and promote good conduct. This is evident from the story where the evil stepmother and the stepsisters are burnt to ashes by the skull.
